Abstract
With the recent expansion of non-face-to-face welfare services for older adults due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the ability to use a smart-phone is acting as an important factor in resolving the social isolation of older adults and increasing the bond with the local community. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to verify the effect of psychological aging anxiety on depression through the mediating effect of ability to use a smart-phone. Data were collected by conducting a questionnaire survey on 154 older adults aged 65 and over living in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do, and Baron & Kenny (1986)¡¯s three-step procedure and the Bootstrap method were used to verify the mediating effect. The findings show as follows.
First, psychological aging anxiety in older adults had a positive (+) effect on depression at a statistically significant level (¥â=0.413, p=0.000). That is, as psychological anxiety about aging increased, depression also showed a tendency to increase. Second, psychological aging anxiety of older adults had a negative (-) effect on the ability to use a smart-phone (¥â=-0.163, p=0.041). In other words, it was found that as psychological aging anxiety increased, the ability to use a smart-phone decreased. Third, in the relationship between psychological aging anxiety and depression among older adults, the ability to use a smart-phone played a mediating effect at a statistically significant level (p=0.004). The higher the ability to use a smart-phone, the lower the depression. The results of this study describe a discussion on social welfare policies and practices for reducing psychological aging anxiety and improving ability to use a smart-phone to reduce depression among older adults.
